Maple class have been working scientifically this week as scientists. We have been consolidating our previous learning by carrying out various tests. During this lesson, we identified that water is a material and that ice is a different state of water. Next, we did some role play as ‘ice’ and ‘water’; as ice we huddled tightly together as the particles in ice do then we pretended to ‘melt’. We did this by slowly moving apart until we were completely apart which represented the particles in water.
For our task, we had blocks of ice with different factors; some had water poured on top, some had salt poured on top and the others just melted in room temperature. We closely observed the ice melting and used stopwatches to time them then wrote our results in a simple table. We concluded that the quickest ice block that melted was the one with water poured on top and the slowest was the one with salt poured on top.
