Larch class have been learning about the Victorians this term and learnt about Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his achievements as an engineer in their DT lessons. We looked at the Clifton suspension bridge and how its design works and were challenged to build a model of the bridge, thinking carefully about the properties of the materials and the methods of attachment.
We planned our design in our sketchbooks and discussed all the joining and strengthening methods we could use, we also discussed how to overcome any challenges we might face. Zac thought the biggest challenge was working out how many straws to use for the roadway and Aiza thought that Vida and herself worked as a team, dividing the tasks.
We tried to include all the features of a suspension bridge and in the next session we will complete our models and evaluate them.
