Ash class are learning about British Inventors in their DT lessons as part of their Brilliant Britain topic this term. We learnt that W.B. Wilkinson invented reinforced concrete by adding steel rods into the concrete and that concrete is a very versatile material which can be shaped and moulded. We were challenged to make a structure that can hold a dictionary using just newspaper and tape. We worked in groups to decide on the best ways to reinforce the paper so that it is strong enough to bear weight.
After moulding, rolling, folding, and scrunching the newspaper, we recorded our findings. We found out that the taller our structure was, the weaker it became. One group were able to hold the dictionary 10cm off the table!
Well done Year 2, you were fantastic designers today!
