During their DT lesson, Ash class investigated the word ‘reinforce’ and learnt about W B Wilkinson’s (a British inventor) invention of reinforced concrete. They looked at different ways that reinforced concrete has been used to build record breaking buildings and investigated the different ways to reinforce newspaper.
The children were able to recognise how the use of reinforced concrete has affected our lives. Next, the children were challenged to build a structure strong enough to hold the weight of a dictionary using just newspaper and tape. The structure must only be made from newspaper and tape and hold the weight of a dictionary by at least 3 cm.
They were challenged to work as team and ensure everybody takes part, and soon found it was not as easy as it seemed! Popular ways of using the newspaper were rolling, folded and layering.
